RETROFITTING OUTDATED ENERGY SYSTEMS
OLD DOESN'T MEAN BAD - REVIVE IT FOR A NEW LIFE
Energy applications where fossil fuels are used as a primary energy source can be easily converted to biofuels or adopted to newest strict environmental regulations by changing combustion system. Modifications can be made to all type of boilers or energy generators.

Retrofitting of an outdated energy system has following advantages:
- Allows the customer to operate existing boilers/systems while converting into renewables.
- Allows to operate old boiler system under current strict environmental regulations.
- Lowers initial investment compared to a new boiler plant.
- Shorter delivery time since changes will be made quickly and easily by replacing existing combustion system.
- With multifuel burner's option gas or oil can be used as a backup fuels.
STUDY CASE: RETROFITTING TO POWDER COMBUSTION
Retrofitting from fossil fuels to bio powder is one of the good examples of retrofitting possibilities. If there is a demand to upgrade your existing energy facility with a new energy production capacity, then retrofitting of existing boiler might be worth to consider.
Following reasons, like outdated infrastructure, lack of space, not matching environmental requirements, an intention to transfer to biomass combustion systems are key factors to consider retrofitting to powder combustion. Powder combustion system allows to keep similar technological parameters of supplied energy from gas or liquid fuels, like possibility of frequently start and stop system, maintain variable steam (heat) production, operate in auto mode without constant personnel. In addition, powder combustion grants benefit of renewable energy, like CO2 emission neutrality, possibility to combust regional or side-stream fuels and to fulfil circular economy approach. This brings set of advantages that combustion of solid fuels cannot compete with.
Retrofitting project usually starts from approximately 3 MW and with multi burner option capacity easily might reach hundreds of MW. In retrofitting of old gas/oil projects additionally infrastructure usually is needed to ensure flawless fuel supply (fuel storage, hammer mill, fuel dosing station) and environmental requirements (flue gas filter, monitoring systems).

Biomass powder fired energy solution typically comprises of following systems:
- Fuel storage and supply system
- Fuel grinding and dosing
- Combustion system with boiler
- Flue gas treatment and ash handling
- Auxiliary systems
- Electrification
- Automation & Control
Using of bioburners in the plants creates following advantages:
- The burners can be operated in auto mode without constant personnel.
- Reaction time to changes in load corresponds to regular gas/oil fuels.
- Works flawlessly with frequent starts and stops.
- Dried and grinded fuels have high calorific value compared to wet fuels, in addition such fuels are easy to store.
- CO2 emission neutral, low NOx and CO emissions.
- To increase reliability of the plant the burners are usually designed for multi fuels - gas, liquid and dust fuels.
